Bucharest, April 16 /Agerpres/ - Romanian Foreign Minister
Cristian Diaconescu met, on April 16, in Brussels, with
president of the European Parliament Hans-Gert Poettering,
on which occasion issues were approached on topical aspects
on the agenda of the European Union, the situation in the
Republic of Moldova, in particular.
According to a press release of the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs, the head of Romanian diplomacy appreciated the
talks with Poettering as extremely encouraging and stressed
that the European Parliament will take new steps in showing
its solidarity with Romania and in dealing with other topics
which have to be discussed and decided on, such as the
sending of a EP mission of information and evaluation to the
Republic of Moldova.
Diaconescu also said "there will be a decision regarding a
resolution of the EP taking into account the developments in
the Republic of Moldova and the need that Europe, as as
whole, shall protect the norms and values we consider highly
important."
Hans-Gert
Pottering declared that the challenges facing Romania are
also challenges for the EU. "We are one political family, we
are together and we expect everybody to observe the European
values. The European Parliament hopes that the Republic of
Moldova will observe the European values and will closely
watch the developments in that country," said Poettering.
The
situation in the Republic of Moldova had also been
discussed in an extraordinary meeting of the Committee on
Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament (AFET), held on
April 15, 2009, in the presence of minister Diaconescu and
of the representative of EP Delegation for the Republic of
Moldova.
