Bucharest, Jan
24 /Agerpres/ - Romanian President Traian Basescu said on Friday, on the
occasion of the celebration of 150 years since the Unification of the Romanian
Principalities, that the Unification in 1859 had been a first victory in the
battle to establish the national state.
"The election of
Alexandru Ioan Cuza as ruler of both Wallachia and Moldavia on January 24, 1859,
has been remembered by history as symbol of the principalities' unification.
Cuza's double election was the result of the people's capacity to politically
answer the foreign pressure and go beyond internal division and personal
interests," Basescu said at the Patriarchal Palace's Hall.
Basescu mentioned in his
speech the personality of the Metropolitan Bishop Nifon, and of other church
leaders who supported the unification. "This proved the Romanian Orthodox
Church's solidarity with the people's desires, alongside its participation in
the modernisation of the Romanian society. The Unification of the Romanian
principalities has greatly impacted Romania's destiny also thanks to its
European dimension," the President said.
The most important
lesson for today's generation is the courage and determination of believing in a
project that has built the modern nation and has given the national history a
meaning.
"The 1859 Unification,
completed by the Great Unification of 1918, is a victory of the national spirit,
a model of vision for the construction of a modern Romania. It reminds us our
responsibility to act to the nation's best interest, to voice and accomplish
Romanians' aspirations," the President said.
Basescu attended a Te
Deum on Friday, held by Romanian Orthodox patriarch Daniel, followed by an
anniversary moment in honour of the Unification. Attending the event, were also
PM Emil Boc, Chamber of Deputies Speaker Roberta Anastase, ministers and members
of the Romanian Academy.
Later, Basescu laid
wreath at the statue of ruler Alexandru Ioan Cuza.
The President received
from Patriarch Daniel a jubilee medal and a book dubbed 'The Romanian Orthodox
Church and the Unification of the Principalities,' published by Muntenia's
Metropolitan Bishopric, on the occasion of the celebration of 150 years since
the Unification of Moldavia and Wallachia.
More ceremonies for the
150th anniversary of the Unification of the Romanian Principalities will be
organized on Saturday in Bucharest, Cluj, Iasi, Focsani and many other cities.
