Romanian Minsiter of Justice, Monica Macovei met on Thursday, November 10th, the US General Attorney and chief of the Department of Justice, Alberto Gonzales on the occasion of her visit to Washington on November 8 – 11, where she was invited to deliver a speech and took part in the International Seminar organized by the American Bar Association on “International Law Enforcement”
During her presence at Washington DC, the Romanian minister also met the co-president of the Helsinki Commission, senator Cristopher Smith and attended negotiations with the World Bank on a USD 130 million loan for reforms in the judicial system.

BUCHAREST - At least six people died in floods which hit southeastern Romania on Thursday damaging hundreds of homes and disrupting traffic on the Black Sea shore towards Bulgaria , state agency Rompres reported.


On the meeting of the National Committee for Emergencies, Prime Minister Calin Popescu-Tariceanu has decided to allocate food and goods of prime necessity to the prefectures of the counties affected by last days floods, provided they request the Government's aid, Mrs. Oana Marinescu, the Government Spokesperson has announced today.

The George Enescu International Festival 2005

The 2005 edition of the George Enescu Festival and International Competition will take place on September 4th – 11th 2005, in Bucharest.
The George Enescu International Festival 2005 opens its 7th year, commemorating 50 years since the death of the great Romanian composer, under the aegis of the Romanian Ministry of Culture and Religious Affaires. The events dedicated to the George Enescu International Year will consist of activities and performances taking place both in Romania and abroad.

Seven Romanian forensic experts will go to the United States in order to aid the American authorities' efforts to limit further disastrous effects caused by Hurricane Katrina, announced today Oana Marinescu, Spokesperson of the Romanian Government

 

Romanian Ambassador Sorin Ducaru traveled to Houston, Baton Rouge and New Orleans to meet Romanians living in the town affected by Katrina hurricane and that have been evacuated. Ambassador Ducaru also traveled to New Orleans where he visited the devastated areas and met the American authorities, discussing about the reconstruction of the area and offering his support.

With respect to the severe floods that have affected Romania recently, and the specific procedures initiated by the Romanian Government to coordinate relief assistance, we would like to inform you that the competent Romanian authorities made significant efforts to reduce the disastrous effects of the floods and provide support to the distressed areas. Nonetheless, external humanitarian and, in particular, reconstruction assistance for the rehabilitation of the flooded regions would represent a considerable contribution in the activities already underway to mitigate the negative consequences of the natural disaster.
For monetary donations/ contributions in US dollars for the distressed areas the Government of Romania has opened at BCR (Banca Comerciala Romana) the account no. RO11RNCB5010000138390085.

Bucharest, July 15 (Rompres) - The floods caused much material damage in three quarters of Romania's territory. A summary of what happened in the past few days reveals the fact that in Romania 482 villages and about 11,250 houses were inundated, 242 houses and 53,319 ha of farmland were destroyed.

The Prime Minister has addressed an appeal at solidarity to support the persons affected by the floods from the last period of time

"I am launching an appeal for solidarity to all Romanians because I believe this is a normal, suitable attitude in such a moment. First of all, I think it is necessary for Romanians to help each other", stated the Prime Minister at his arrival from the visit he paid today in Bacau county.

The Vice-president of the Moderate Party and Vice-president of the Foreign Policy Commission of the Swedish Parliament, Gunilla Carlsson, and Vice-President of the European Affairs Commission of the Swedish Parliament, Carl Hamilton also attended the meeting, as well as representatives of the Liberal Party, in opposition.
The Swedish officials have unanimously affirmed their support for Romania's accession to the European Union in accordance with the agreed-upon calendar. They also expressed their appreciation for the efforts of the Romanian Government in fighting corruption and the fast development of reforms in Romania.

Legislators voted 522-70 in favor of Bulgaria, with 69 abstenions, and 497-93 in favor of Romania, with 71 abstentions, in two ballots after a heated debate in which some members asked for a postponement of the vote, demanding the two Balkan countries be given more time to implement necessary reforms.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania congratulated Condoleeza Rice for her confirmation as US Secretary of State

During a phone conversation on Thursday, January 27th evening, Mr. Mihai-Razvan Ungureanu, Foreign Minister of Romania congratulated Ms. Condoleeza Rice for her confirmation as US Secretary of State. The head of Romanian diplomacy expressed Romania's wish to consolidate the bilateral cooperation, showing that the US-Romanian strategic partnership is an essential and privileged element of Romania's foreign policy.
Minister Ungureanu reaffirmed Romania's disponibility to cooperating in the bilateral dialogue on issues of common interest on the international agenda, given that Romania is actively contributing together with the US in the world camapaign against terror.
The two heads of the Romanian and US diplomacies agreed on organizing a bilateral meeting soon.

The President of Romania, Traian Basescu, took part at the ceremonies commemorating 60 years since the liberation of the Auschwitz - Birkenau concentration camp. Survivors Head of States and Governments and militaries gathered on Thursday, January 27th in Auschwitz, Poland.
President Traian Basescu lighted a candle in front of the commemorative inscription in Romanian saying: “Let this place, be a cry for discouragement and warning for humanity, this place where Nazis killed almost a million and a half men, women and children, especially Jews from different European countries.”


 

Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu participated at the “Perspectives over Romania's Prosperity” on Thursday, January 27th, at Hotel Mariott in Bucharest . The ambassador of The United States in Romania, Jack Dyer Crouch II and the Chief of the European Commission Delegation in Romania, Jonathan Scheele also took part in the event. On this occasion Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu addressed the business community in Romania and foreign guests invited at the event.

Visit of Prime Minister to Brussel
January 24-25

Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu went on a two-day official visit to Brussels, his first formal contact with the European institutions since he took over the office in late December. On his agenda were meetings with European Commission President Jose Manuel Durao Barroso, European Parliament President Josep Borrell, the chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, the leaders of the different political groups, and his Belgian counterpart Guy Verhofstadt.

 
Romania celebrates the Day of the Union

Romania celebrates on Monday, January 24th, the Day of the Union of the Romanian Principalities in 1859.
On this occasion, President Traian Basescu and other Romanian officials participated at the ceremonies that took place in Iasi.
“I came to Iasi with love in my hart and the happiness of being close to the people I love and - why not - people that love me too”, confessed President Basescu, during his speech in Iasi, in front of Romanians that gathered to celebrate the Day of the Union.

Romanian President Traian Basescu attended on Sunday the ceremonies for swearing in Ukrainian President-elect Viktor Yushchenko.
Present was High Representative of the EU for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana, US Secretary of State Colin Powell, Polish President Alexandr Kwasniewski, NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer. Romanian President Traian Basescu's participation in the ceremonies of swearing in his Ukrainian opposite number is part of the special relationship the new power in Bucharest wants to develop with Ukraine. The Romanian head of state has repeatedly said that after the victory of the democratic Opposition in the neighbouring country, Romania has to consolidate its relations in all fields with a state with such a high potential as Ukraine, for the benefit of both countries.

President Traian Basescu said Wednesday that Romania wants to play a bigger role in the Black Sea region, and discussed facilities that can serve as NATO and U.S. military bases in this Balkan country.
"Romania wants to take a major role in providing stability in the region, and can be a strong element of balance in the Black Sea region," Basescu said after meeting with Gen. James Jones, the top commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Europe.

President Traian Basescu pleads for strengthening Romania's strategic role in ensuring regional stability

President Traian Basescu stated on Saturday that Romania must strengthen its strategic role in ensuring regional stability both in the interest of its own national security and as a contribution to NATO and EU security. He also emphasized the fact that Romanian foreign policy had so far missed the opportunity of Romania being a stability factor in the area of former Yugoslavia and in the ex-Soviet space.
President Basescu said these things after a meeting he had with a delegation of US Congress experts, who are on a visit to Romania to assess the situation and the developments in the Black Sea area.
The Romanian Ambassador to Washington, Sorin Ducaru, and the Ambassador of the United States to Romania, Jack Dyer Crouch, also attended the meeting.

U.S. Looks Forward to Continued Cooperation with Romania

State Department deputy spokesman Adam Ereli said January 4 that the United States looks forward to continuing its close cooperation with Romania on a wide range of issues as the new Romanian government takes charge.
He congratulated Romanian President Traian Basescu and Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu on the formation of a new government and said Secretary of State Colin Powell had called Foreign Minister Mihai- Razvan Ungureanu to offer his congratulations and to discuss relations between the United States and Romania.
