Visa Waiver Program consultations take place in Washington between Romanian and American experts
On Thursday, October 25, an inter-agency delegation from the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Interior and Administrative Reform held a first round of consultations in Washington on the technical steps necessary for Romania 's accession into the Visa Waiver Program. The Romanian delegation met with experts from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and discussed the complexity of the accession process. The meetings provided an adequate framework and a timely opportunity for a joint assessment of the recently enacted U.S. legislative provisions that open the Visa Waiver Program to new participating countries on a conditional basis. Romania 's candidacy to participate in the program has been presented as an opportunity to consolidate Transatlantic security and to advance the development of economic exchanges, tourism and academic contacts between Romania and the United States.

Romanian Contemporary Film Series at the Harvard Film Archive
The Kokkalis Program, in cooperation with the Harvard Film Archive, organizes a Romanian film series, premiering Friday, October 5, which highlights the works of four of Romania 's most important directors: Cristi Puiu, Cristian Nemescu, Catalin Mitulescu and Corneliu Porumboiu.
According to the Harvard Film Archive: "The notion that Romania could emerge as one of the most vibrant and exciting filmmaking centers in Europe , if not the world, would have seemed far-fetched a decade ago. And yet, within the past five years a generation of remarkably talented young Romanian directors have produced an impressive body of films that have consistently landed at the top of international critics' polls and in the coveted top tier of film festivals from Cannes to New York ."

Romanian artist Mircea Cantor at the Hirshhorn Museum
Born in Romania in 1977, and currently based in Paris. Hitchhiking across Europe, he led an itinerant life that duplicated the curiosity with which he explores artistic genres. The Hirshhorn's exhibition includes: “Deeparture” (2005), a film that recorded a suspenseful dance between a wolf and a deer trapped in a small gallery space—a piece that calls to mind Joseph Beuys's 1974 performance “I Like America and America Likes Me,” in which the artist locked himself up with a coyote at the René Block Gallery in New York for a week. Cantor's short video is a disturbingly silent examination of ideas about nature and dominance played out in a time-distorting loop. The Hirshhorn's Black Box presents recent film and video works by a diverse range of emerging and established international artists. This presentation is organized by associate curator Kelly Gordon. Films run continuously during museum hours.

On view through January 6, 2008 at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke
University
The Nasher Museum presents an unprecedented mid-career retrospective of the
work of Romanian artists Dan Perjovschi and Lia Perjovschi. Born in 1961,
Dan & Lia Perjovschi create work that resides at the nexus of art, society
and politics; both artists belong to the first avant-garde movement
following the 1989 Romania Revolution. The exhibition includes paintings,
sculptures, drawings, photographs, videos, installations and conceptual art
from 1986 to the present, as well as new commissioned works. The show
follows a recent installation of Dan Perjovschi's drawings in the "Projects"
section of MoMA.
The exhibition is accompanied by a 238-page catalogue distributed by Duke
University Press. The exhibition is curated by Kristine Stiles, professor of
contemporary art and visual culture in Duke's Department of Art, Art History & Visual Studies.

Joint Embassy Statement
Re: U.S. Visa Waiver Program Modernization
The Embassies of the Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia appreciate the bipartisan efforts of the U.S. Administration and Members of both chambers of Congress to modernize and expand the United States Visa Waiver Program through provisions in H.R. 1, “Implementing Recommendations of the 9/11 Commission Act of 2007,” recently signed by President Bush.
We believe that these provisions are a step forward in the right direction. Nevertheless, the legislation does not fully meet our expectations due to its reliance on visa refusal rates as a criterion for program participation. As a result, some of America 's closest allies will still be subject to artificial barriers that do not reflect their deep level of commitment and engagement in enhancing transatlantic and global security.
We will continue to work for a visa policy that recognizes our common security, economic, and foreign policy goals. As members of the European Union and firm allies of the United States, we believe that success in this endeavor is a critical tool in strengthening our transatlantic alliance without differentiating between EU member states. We are committed to working with the U.S. Administration and Congress to achieve a solution that will allow for visa-free travel to the U.S. for our citizens.

Romanian Director Wants Audiences, Not Awards
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Romanian director Cristian Mungiu found international stardom when his second film won the top prize at Cannes this year, but he says reaching a wider audience is more important to him than the glory of awards.
Mungiu's "4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days," which is showing at the New York Film Festival, is based on a true story of two students in communist Romania trying to arrange an abortion. But the 39-year-old hopes to translate his Palme d'Or win at Cannes into mainstream U.S. success.
"I don't see myself as an arthouse filmmaker, making films for small theaters and few people," he told Reuters in an interview.
